About Hive & Veil

What Hive & Veil is

Hive & Veil is a small team of researchers and writers who publish clear, honest guides for people keeping honey bees in the backyard. Our slogan is the whole brief: the honest guide to backyard bees.

We want to be straight with you about who is behind these pages. We are not commercial beekeepers, and we do not run an apiary. We do not sell hives, bees, gear, or honey, and no manufacturer pays us to recommend a product. That independence is the point. A company that sells one hive system cannot tell you when a cheaper option is the smarter first buy. We can.

Why we built it

Beginner beekeeping advice online tends to fall into two camps. Some of it is a storefront with an article wrapped around it. Some of it is vague enough to never be wrong and never be useful. The questions that actually keep a first-year beekeeper up at night, what this really costs, whether the colony is queenless, when a mite count means treat now, rarely get a plain answer with real numbers.

So that is what we set out to write: the itemized cost, the threshold that means act, the honest yield you should expect in year one, the time it really takes. When the honest answer is that you do not need a thing, we say so, even when a sale would have been easier.

How we research

Every guide is built from published sources, mostly university extension programs, USDA and ARS research, and the Honey Bee Health Coalition. We read those, we work from them, and we list them at the bottom of each article so you can check our work and go deeper. Where a topic touches health or law, such as sting reactions or local ordinances, we point you to the medical and legal authorities and never substitute our own ruling for theirs.

We use AI tools in our writing process. A guide does not become public until it has been built from and reconciled against the sources we cite, and we revise pages as guidance and prices change. If you find something wrong or out of date, tell us and we will fix it.

Our promise

We would rather lose the sale than oversell the honey. We will tell you when two hives beat one, when the budget kit is enough, and when the expensive tool is a year-two purchase at best. That is the only way a guide like this earns trust without a backlink or a brand deal, and trust is the whole business.
